Central Park Theater

Built in 1917, the historic Central Park Theater is one of Chicago's most significant surviving early movie palaces. Designed by renowned architects Cornelius W. Rapp and George L. Rapp of Rapp & Rapp, it was the first theater developed by Balaban & Katz, helping to establish the grand movie palace experience that would later influence theaters across the United States. The Spanish Revival-style theater was known for its innovative design, ornate decorative features, and early adoption of air conditioning. Its success helped launch the Balaban & Katz theater empire, which would later include such iconic venues as the Chicago, Uptown, and Riviera Theatres. Since 1971, the building has served as a house of worship, continuing its long tradition as a community gathering place. Many historic features, including the original auditorium, balcony, and architectural detailing, remain visible today, preserving an important piece of Chicago's architectural and cultural history.
