Olson Kundig

Olson Kundig is a collaborative global design practice whose work spans residential, cultural, hospitality, and commercial projects. Founded in Seattle in 1966, the firm is known for an approach that balances craft, materiality, and a deep connection to place. The Chicago studio, opened in 2024, marks the firm's third location and its first in the Midwest. The office occupies a historic 1889 brick-and-timber building in the revitalized Fulton Market neighborhood, once a casket manufacturing facility and later a lighting production space. The interior layout draws inspiration from Olson Kundig's New York and Seattle offices by removing existing private offices to expose the structural elements and transform the space into an open environment with dedicated spaces for collaboration. East- and west-facing windows frame Chicago skyline views while flooding the space with natural light. Custom plywood millwork, an industrial art wall, and integrated shelving complement the original patinaed hardwood floors.
