Chinese American Service League Kam Liu Building

The Kam L. Liu Building is the permanent home of the Chinese American Service League (CASL), the largest nonprofit serving Asian American communities in the Midwest. Completed in 2004 and designed by Studio Gang, the 38,300-square-foot building received AIA Chicago's Distinguished Building Award and a Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Award for Architectural Excellence. The design reflects CASL's mission and the community it serves. Architectural details draw from a Chinese palette of color, pattern, and symbol. Controllable natural daylighting and ventilation animate the interior throughout the day. Founded in 1978, CASL serves over 7,400 clients annually — through early childhood education, immigration and legal services, English language courses, housing and financial workshops, behavioral health and clinical services, and older adult care. This building anchors that legacy in the physical heart of the neighborhood.
