Oak Woods Cemetery

Oak Woods Cemetery in Woodlawn is an example of the park lawn cemetery or rural cemetery, with a verdant landscape designed by landscape architect Adolph Strauch in the 1850s. Operating as a burial site for notable Chicagoans since 1860, the cemetery comprises 184 acres of lush greenery and four small manmade lakes. It is the permanent resting place of important Chicagoans such as Ida B. Wells, Harold Washington, Jesse Owens, Enrico Fermi, Otis Clay, Thomas A. Dorsey, Albertina Walker, and Eddie Harris, among others.
