Christ the Savior Orthodox Church

Christ the Savior Orthodox Church is a parish of the Orthodox Church in America. The exterior masonry is a combination of red brick and limestone, designed in the Tudor style, and the battlement adorning the top of the walls recalls medieval English fortified churches. The wide entrance stair leads to an elaborate arched doorway, and the vast interior space is adorned by artfully-crafted trusses supporting the roof with skylights. Traditional Christian iconography and a carved wooden sanctuary screen (iconostasis) have been integrated into the space. The church originally belonged to a small Presbyterian denomination, from which the Orthodox Church acquired the building in 1996. The property also includes a parish hall and rectory in the adjacent building, which at one time belonged to prominent 19th-century engineer Ellis Chesbrough, the designer of the first Chicago water management system.
