DETAILS:

Working Bikes is celebrating 27 years of redistributing used bikes to people who need them in Chicago and across the world. Each year, some 10,000 bikes are sent overseas to projects in Africa and Central America, while volunteers fix and redistribute another few thousand bikes to Chicagoans looking for an affordable, quality ride. The Working Bikes building, a former borax factory, processes about 13,000 bikes each year and boasts the largest collection of used bikes in the Midwest. There are even a few pedal-powered contraptions that do things like pump water or play records.

VISITOR EXPERIENCE:

Visitors will enter through a new accessible entrance on 24th Place and can peruse public areas until the next guided tour of the 3-story facility plus rooftop. Groups of 10-15 will spend 20-30 minutes walking through the warehouse and learning about the history of the space and the organization.
